These aren't Disney Princess Castles

We arrived in Frankfurt, Germany at 9:00am local time. My amazing rock-star cousin-Ricky-picked us up from the largest airport ever. It took about 25 minutes just to walk to the car. We rode this self automated little mono-rail to get to the parking structure.

Ricky drove us directly to Heidelburg Castle. The whole ride over there I was blown away by the beauty of Germany. It's so green here! Even greener than Washington or Oregon. We had a running joke yesterday-every single time Super Nel got into the car he would pass out and sleep. I adjusted to the time a little quicker than he did.

The Heidelburg Castle was gorgeous. The grounds are wonderfully landscaped and there's a great view of the city. In the basement they have a ginormous barrel where they kept the wine. Now they have a small snack bar area and serve local beer-it was delicious. There is also a pharmacy museum in the castle. Did you know that a German discovered morphine? The museum has the whole history of chemistry and shows how the first drugs were made as well as the transition to current pharmacy practices.

After the Heidelburg castle we went to drop off our luggage at Ricky's place. He's stationed in Kaiserslautern on an Air Force base and he is pretty excited to help us explore Germany.

We headed back out to another castle close by. This castle is much smaller and not as we'll known as the Heidelburg. But the place was amazing! They have these underground rooms you can explore and it feels like there's air conditioning on down there. It's because of the mud that was used to build the castle-it keeps heat out and feels really great in the summertime. Ricky says it was pouring rain a few days ago but it's been hot since we landed. The San Diego sunshine stowed away in our luggage and came with us.

Last night we went into town to Kaiserslautern. There was a huge street festival happening the streets were filled with locals. I've never seen so many people! We drank some more beer (it really is better in Germany) and spoke with some locals and even lost a very close game of foozeball to some new friends we met.

Heidelberg castle-enjoying some curryworst and our first beer.

The view from our second castle.

Sunsets after 9pm overhere!
