Amsterdam Arrival

On the evening of our first full day in Amsterdam another set of friends arrived in the evening to join in the honey(group)moon festivities. My best friend, Miss Delia, was coming with her sister Rianna and her two friends Mel and Ala. This would be their first time in Europe and they would be following us on our itinerary up until Paris. I was very excited to have them join us on this adventure.

Miss Delia is an avid traveler and has seen many different countries on her adventures. However, she was very excited to explore Europe. When they arrived at the hostel they were energized and ready to go exploring. What they weren't ready for was the weather. It is so cold in Amsterdam. I don't think any of us really expected to feel such a sharp bite from the wind and chill while exploring the city. Super Nel and I broke down and had to buy some heavy duty beanie hats that are lined with fleece to keep your ears warm. The beanie I came with was a black crocheted hat that was a gift from a friend Stela years ago-but the holes from the crochet allowed the cold to get in and made it hard to keep warm when walking around. I alsog purchased a thick black hand knit scarf that I can wrap around my head for extra warmth. Miss Delia and her crew were trying hard to adjust to the cold when they landed.

Rianna, me, Miss Delia, Ala and Mel minutes after their arrival to our hostel. They are all very excited to be in Europe.

We spent our first night touring the Red Light District. **Please be advised, the following content is for ages 18 years old and over**

We took a local tram down to the Red Light District. As most of you may know this area is full of sex shops and full of large door sized windows where women stand in scarcely clad clothing trying to find companionship for the evening. When a lady of the night finds a customer, they invite them into their room where the customer pays for sexual acts. I was very intrigued by the entire process. Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam and regulated by the city. However, I found myself having so many questions about the process. These girls/ladies were of various ages and most looked healthy and could pass for a model from a magazine. My friend Jose and I found ourselves wondering how these girls end up making these choices. I would love nothing more than to take one of them out for coffee and ask how it is that they went about acquiring this profession. Did they aspire to work as a prostitute? Was there a life changing event that brought them to this decision? What kind of salary do they make working as a lady of the night? So many questions that would not be answered by walking around in the evening down these various dark allies with red light windows.

As we sat down at a local bar we found ourselves making a light joke. We saw a man leave one of the small windows and he immediately made a phone call. We pretended to be the ones on the phone and somone said "I wonder if he's calling his wife and asking if she needs anything before he comes home from a long day at 'work'."

A tasty treat from the Red Light district. We each grabbed a dessert item from this bakery that stays open late.
